Mercury Retrograde & Shadow Work: 7 Ways to Heal Your Energy and Grow Spiritually

Have you ever noticed old emotions resurfacing, familiar patterns repeating, or people from your past suddenly coming back into your life?

Instead of viewing these experiences as something to fear or feel anxious about, what if you approached them as an opportunity to get to know yourself on a deeper level?

Mercury retrograde is often associated with miscommunication, technology delays, and unexpected disruptions. While it's always helpful to slow down and double-check the details, there's another way to approach this astrological period: as an opportunity for shadow work, energy healing, and spiritual growth.

As I've learned more about evolutionary astrology, I've come to appreciate how astrology can offer us a deeper understanding of ourselves. Rather than simply focusing on what's happening around us, we can use these moments to explore what's happening within us.

Mercury is associated with communication, learning, information, thinking, and processing our experiences. When Mercury goes retrograde, we can think of it as an invitation to revisit, reconsider, rethink, and reflect.

You might find yourself revisiting old experiences, recognizing patterns you hadn't noticed before, or looking at familiar situations through a completely different lens.

Rather than asking, "Why does this keep happening to me?" consider asking, "What is this experience showing me about myself?"

Here are seven ways to work with Mercury retrograde through shadow work, energy healing, and spiritual growth.

1. Protect Your Peace and Give Yourself Time to Respond

One of the most important things you can practice during Mercury retrograde is learning to pause before reacting.

It's easy to become frustrated when someone says something upsetting, crosses a boundary, or does something that triggers an emotional response. Our instinct might be to immediately defend ourselves, explain how we feel, or react in the moment.

But what happens when you give yourself a little space before responding?

Even three to five seconds can make a difference. Sometimes, you might need to step away from a situation and return to it later.

Giving yourself time allows you to understand what you're actually feeling rather than responding from the intensity of the moment.

This can also create an opportunity for shadow work.

Ask yourself:

  • Why is this particular comment or situation bothering me so much?

  • Does this remind me of an experience when I felt rejected, misunderstood, or hurt?

  • Am I responding to what's happening right now, or is something from my past being triggered?

Sometimes, the intensity of our reaction connects to an older experience or emotional pattern.

Protecting your peace doesn't mean ignoring your feelings or allowing people to cross your boundaries. It means giving yourself the space to process your emotions before deciding how you want to move forward.

You don't have to give your energy away to every person or situation that depletes you.

2. Use Shadow Work to Identify Repeating Patterns

Mercury retrograde can be a helpful time to explore the patterns that keep showing up in your life.

Shadow work involves exploring the parts of yourself that you might be more tempted to hide, avoid, or push away.

When you become more aware of your shadow self, you create an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply and make different choices.

For example, perhaps you continually find yourself in relationships or situations where you feel like you have to prove your worth.

You might spend a lot of time focusing on what the other person isn't giving you, why they're not showing up for you, or why they aren't treating you the way you would treat them.

While it's important to recognize when other people or external situations are draining your energy, you can also turn inward and ask yourself some deeper questions.

  • Why do I feel like I have to prove my worth?

  • Why do I feel unloved or unappreciated?

  • Am I afraid to speak up because I don't know how someone will react?

  • Why am I looking for external validation?

  • What beliefs about myself might be influencing my choices?

These questions aren't about blaming yourself for someone else's behavior. They're about recognizing where you have the power to make changes in your own life.

You cannot control what another person says, does, or chooses to change. But you can become more aware of your own patterns, boundaries, and responses.

Sometimes, a pattern that once aligned with who you were no longer aligns with who you're becoming.

Mercury retrograde can be a reminder to revisit those patterns and ask yourself what you're ready to do differently.

3. Bring Your Attention Back to Your Energy

When you overthink, worry, or replay conversations over and over again, it's easy to lose connection with the present moment.

You might find yourself thinking about something that happened yesterday, something embarrassing from years ago, what could happen tomorrow, or what someone else might be thinking about you.

Before you know it, your mind is running in circles.

This is where energy work can be especially helpful.

As a Reiki Master Teacher, Reiki has been one of the most transformative practices in my own life. I love practicing it and teaching others how to work with energy.

But you don't need to practice Reiki to reconnect with yourself.

You can explore breathwork, meditation, energy healing, or another practice that helps you redirect your attention inward.

You also don't need to spend hours doing it. Even a few intentional minutes each day can create space to pause, reflect, and reconnect.

The goal is to slow down, become more present, and remind yourself that you don't need to figure everything out right now.

Instead of getting caught up in every thought, give yourself an opportunity to reconnect with what you need in the present moment.

Sometimes, you don't need to analyze everything. You just need to come back to yourself.

4. Journal to Understand Your Thoughts and Emotions

Sometimes, it's difficult to understand what you need when you're stuck inside your own thoughts.

Journaling gives you an opportunity to put those thoughts and feelings somewhere outside of your head. When you write things down, you might begin recognizing patterns, connections, or emotions that you hadn't fully understood before.

During Mercury retrograde, set aside some time to write without worrying about whether everything makes sense.

You don't need to intellectualize your feelings or have all the answers before you begin.

Here are a few journal prompts to help you get started:

  • What has been taking up the most space in my mind lately?

  • Why might this situation be affecting me so deeply?

  • Is there a pattern I'm ready to stop repeating?

  • What can I do differently moving forward?

Allow yourself to write freely and see what comes up.

You might discover that you don't need to have all the answers right away. Sometimes, clarity comes when you give yourself the space and permission to explore the questions.

The more you practice checking in with yourself, the easier it can become to recognize your thoughts, emotions, and intuitive insights.

5. Revisit Unfinished Business Without Reopening Closed Doors

Mercury retrograde is often associated with the past resurfacing, and you might find yourself thinking about unfinished business.

But this doesn't mean you need to reopen every door that has been closed.

Some relationships ended for a reason. Some chapters are simply complete, and moving forward means allowing them to stay in the past.

Instead, consider whether there are projects, goals, interests, or personal practices you've left on the back burner.

Maybe you've been thinking about changing your routine, taking a class, learning a new skill, or returning to something you once loved.

This can be an opportunity to ask yourself:

  • What have I been putting off?

  • Is this something I still want to pursue?

  • What would it look like to give myself permission to revisit it?

You might also find that people from your past suddenly reappear.

Rather than automatically assuming their return means you're meant to reconnect, take a moment to consider what their presence is bringing up for you.

Do you see this person differently now?

Have you recognized that the relationship no longer serves you?

Are there feelings, patterns, or unresolved emotions that you're ready to work through?

Perhaps you're being invited to explore forgiveness or release something you've been holding onto.

Remember, not everything that returns to your life needs to stay there.

You can acknowledge the lesson without repeating the experience.

6. Become More Intentional About Your Communication and Boundaries

Because Mercury is associated with communication, this is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how you express yourself and communicate your needs.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I communicate my wants and needs clearly?

  • Am I saying what I actually mean?

  • Do I hold back because I'm afraid of how someone might respond?

  • Am I avoiding conversations because I'm uncomfortable with conflict?

  • Are my boundaries being communicated clearly?

Sometimes, we assume other people understand exactly what we're trying to say because we know the context of a situation.

But other people don't necessarily have the same information or perspective that we do.

This is an opportunity to become more mindful of how you communicate so that your message is understood.

It's also worth exploring the conversations you might be avoiding.

If you're afraid to speak up, ask yourself why. Is there another way to approach the conversation? What would help you feel more comfortable and grounded when expressing yourself?

Boundaries are another important part of this process.

If you haven't spent much time exploring your boundaries, consider what you need and how you can begin communicating those needs to others.

And remember, you don't have to get it perfect.

You might realize after a conversation that a boundary wasn't strong enough and that you need to communicate it differently next time.

The goal isn't to become a perfect communicator overnight. It's to become more aware of how you express yourself and to communicate in a way that aligns with what you truly want.

Most importantly, allow yourself to express what you need without feeling responsible for how another person reacts.

You are responsible for yourself, not for managing everyone else's emotions.

7. Give Yourself Permission to Change Your Perspective

One of the most empowering things you can do during Mercury retrograde is allow yourself to see things differently.

You are allowed to grow. You are allowed to change your mind. And you're allowed to outgrow beliefs, behaviors, and perspectives that no longer align with who you are.

Who you were last year might not be who you are today.

The things you didn't resonate with two years ago might be the very things you're ready to explore now.

Sometimes, we become so attached to the way we've always thought about ourselves that we don't realize we're limiting our own growth.

Maybe you've always believed you're not good at speaking up.

Maybe you've convinced yourself you're not creative, intuitive, or capable of pursuing something you truly want.

But what if those beliefs are no longer serving you?

What if you're ready to see yourself differently?

Growth doesn't mean you have to return to who you used to be. Sometimes, it means recognizing that you needed to be that person to learn something, and now you get to decide how you want to move forward.

And if you're reflecting on past mistakes or feeling ashamed about how you handled a situation, try not to become stuck in those feelings.

You cannot change what happened, but you can acknowledge the past without allowing it to define your future.

Instead, ask yourself:

  • What do I know now that I didn't know then?

  • What have I learned about myself?

  • What do I want my life to look like moving forward?

  • What choices can I begin making that reflect the person I'm becoming?

You're allowed to evolve. You're allowed to change your perspective. And you're allowed to create a future that reflects who you are and what matters to you now.

Final Thoughts: Use Mercury Retrograde as an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

Instead of approaching Mercury retrograde with fear, consider using it as an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and become more intentional about your energy.

Here are the seven practices to remember:

  1. Protect your peace: Give yourself time to process before reacting.

  2. Explore repeating patterns: Use shadow work to understand what's coming up for you.

  3. Reconnect with your energy: Practice Reiki, breathwork, meditation, or another form of energy healing.

  4. Journal your thoughts: Create space to recognize your emotions and insights.

  5. Revisit unfinished business: Explore what you're ready to return to and what you're ready to leave behind.

  6. Be intentional with communication: Express your needs and establish healthy boundaries.

  7. Allow yourself to evolve: Give yourself permission to change your beliefs and perspectives.

And remember, you don't need to do all seven things at once.

Choose the practice that resonates most with you. Trust your intuition, give yourself time, and allow yourself the opportunity to reflect, rest, and reconnect.

Your growth doesn't have to happen all at once. Sometimes, the most meaningful changes begin with simply becoming more aware of what's happening within you.

I'd love to hear from you: Which of these seven practices resonates with you the most? And which one do you find the most challenging?
