Root Chakra Healing: 7 Ways to Feel Grounded, Safe, & Balanced

Have you ever had one of those moments where you feel completely ungrounded? Maybe something unexpected happens, and suddenly you feel overwhelmed, anxious, scattered, or almost disconnected from your own body. There are so many things happening at once that you just can't seem to feel centered. If you've experienced this, it might be time to give your root chakra a little more attention.

The root chakra is the energy center associated with grounding, security, safety, stability, and our connection to the physical body. It's essentially your energetic foundation.

What Is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra is located at the very bottom of the spine and is energetically connected to our sense of safety, survival, stability, and groundedness. I like to think of the root chakra as the foundation of a house. When the foundation is strong, you have something solid to build upon. In the same way, when you feel grounded and secure within your own body, it's easier to move forward, pursue your goals, try new things, and navigate change.

We all experience different periods in life when certain energy centers may need more attention. Your root chakra might feel especially activated during times of uncertainty or major life changes. Maybe you're starting a new path, experiencing an illness or loss, going through a big transition, or dealing with something that suddenly disrupts your sense of safety. You might even be at a point in your life where you're trying to step outside your comfort zone and become more of your authentic self.

I've noticed that when people go through significant changes, there's often an energetic pull to come back to center. It's almost like your body is asking you to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and come back into the present moment.

Signs Your Root Chakra Needs Attention

So what might it feel like when your root chakra needs a little more love? You might feel ungrounded, scattered, overwhelmed, or like you have so much going on that you can't get yourself organized. I always think of the visual of standing in the middle of a huge tornado. Everything around you is changing and moving, and you're trying to keep yourself together while everything feels completely out of control.

You might also feel disconnected from your physical body or notice that you're spending too much time in your head. It's almost like your head is in the clouds, and you can't quite get yourself back into your body. One thing I've noticed is that when you're feeling ungrounded, you may have a deep need to reconnect with your physical body. Your body is asking you to come back to it.

If you're noticing these feelings, here are seven simple ways to begin grounding your energy.

7 Simple Ways to Ground Your Root Chakra

1. Start With Your Breath

When you're nervous or overwhelmed, your breathing changes. You might breathe more shallowly, breathe faster, or even hold your breath without realizing it. So when stress starts taking over, bring your attention back to your breath. Take a moment to breathe slowly and allow your breath to move into the lower part of your body. Notice your body as a whole. Where are you holding tension? What does your body feel like right now? You don't need to force anything. Simply slow down, breathe, and notice what your body is doing in space. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause long enough to recognize that you're here, in this moment.

2. Reconnect With Your Feet and the Earth

Grounding can be incredibly simple. Start by noticing your feet. Feel the bottoms of your feet and pay attention to how they're making contact with the floor. You might be surprised by how often you're standing on your tiptoes, shifting your weight around, or standing on the outsides of your feet instead of fully placing your feet on the ground. The next time you notice that your feet aren't flat on the floor, use it as a reminder to ground yourself. Plant your feet, feel the support beneath you, and bring your attention back into your body. You can take this a step further by going outside and placing your feet on the grass. Sit on the ground, touch a tree, or simply spend time in nature. Notice the leaves moving in the breeze, the sounds around you, and what the air smells like. Instead of thinking about everything you need to do, allow yourself to be present. Reconnecting with the natural elements around you can be a beautiful way to bring your attention back to the earth and your physical body.

3. Nourish Your Body

Sometimes grounding is less about doing another spiritual practice and more about taking care of the body you're living in. Eat nourishing foods, drink enough water, get adequate rest, and give yourself the care you need. Foods like meat and dark chocolate are often associated with root chakra grounding practices. You can explore what feels nourishing and supportive for your own body. The important thing is to remember that you're not just an energetic being. You're also a human being who needs food, water, rest, and physical care.

4. Use Water to Release Stress and Tension

Water can be a wonderful grounding tool. You don't need to take a long bath or have an elaborate self-care routine. If you don't have a bathtub, simply take a shower or wash your hands. As you feel the water on your skin, imagine the stress you've been carrying, the worries, the tension, and the things you've been trying to control flowing away. Visualize those things going down the drain, and set the intention that what you're releasing is no longer something you need to carry. This is one of the things I love about energy work: your intention matters. You can take an ordinary moment, like washing your hands, and turn it into an opportunity to reconnect with yourself.

5. Work With Grounding Crystals

If crystals resonate with you, there are several beautiful stones you can incorporate into your grounding practice. Black tourmaline is one of my favorite grounding crystals. Obsidian and red jasper are also commonly used in grounding practices. You don't need an elaborate crystal collection. You can keep one at your desk, carry one in your wallet, wear it as a bracelet, or simply hold it in your hand when you need a moment to reconnect with yourself. Let it serve as a physical reminder to slow down, breathe, and come back to center.

6. Explore Sound Healing

Sound healing is another practice you can explore when you're looking for ways to support your energy and reconnect with your body. There are many root chakra and grounding sound healing videos available online, and you can start by exploring some free options before spending money on a class or session. I do find that sound healing is one of those practices people either love or don't particularly enjoy, so give yourself permission to experiment and see what resonates with you. I also have free videos on my YouTube channel, I Am Stefanie Ruth, along with other resources you can explore.

7. Ask Your Body What It Needs

This might be the simplest practice of all. When you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or like you need to escape everything happening around you, give yourself a moment to pause. Ask yourself: Do I feel safe in my body? What does my body need from me right now? How can I feel more supported? Then listen. You don't need to have an immediate answer, and you don't need to judge whatever comes up. Sometimes your body needs rest. Sometimes it needs movement, quiet, nourishment, or a little time outside. Give yourself permission to respond to what you need instead of pushing through everything.

Why Grounding Is So Important for Your Spiritual Growth

Something I think we sometimes forget is that we're having a spiritual experience in a human body. It's easy to become so focused on manifesting, meditating, developing your intuition, and connecting with Spirit that we forget we're also human. We're going to experience stress, physical discomfort, pain, uncertainty, and all the other things that come with living life. Grounding helps bring you back together. It reminds you that you don't have to spend all your time focused on what's happening next or trying to figure everything out. You can come back to your body, your breath, and the present moment.
